Kaicho Morton and Long time friend,
Bill (Chuck) Potter sensei

Photo taken in 1995 during a workout at one of my seminars held at El Toro Marine Base, CA

Potter sensei and I have known each other since 1961 where we met during our tour in the Marine Corps at HQ 3rd Marine Division Camp Courtney, Okinawa. From 1961 to 1965, Potter sensei was the chief instructor of the Judo team at Camp Courtney as well as the Japanese translator for the 3rd Marine Division. Prior to enlisting in the Marine Corps, Potter sensei learned his initial martial arts training under Al Holtman sensei while living in San Diego, CA.. Having worked out with Potter sensei in Judo before finding Nakasato and Shobudo, I have since devoted all my time in learning Jitsu.

In the early days of the 60's, marrying a local national was a six -month average process in documentation, background investigations, interviews and tactics for discouraging marriage. One of Sgt. Potter's duties as translator for the Division was to interview all national applicants requesting marriage to all Marine Division personal no matter what rank! As my wife Yoshi and I were interviewed by Sgt. Potter… our friendship was imbedded subconsciously for the future.

As I pursued learning Shobudo and He pursued the teaching of Judo of which he earned a Nidan in Judo as well as a Nidan in Dan Zan Ryu JuJitsu, we some what lost contact with each other until some 20 years later. While stationed at HQ 4th Marine Division New Orleans, LA from July 1982 thru my retirement in June 1985 my eldest daughter Andrea met and married, Bill's younger brother Lt. Michael Potter USN. Attending the wedding, Bill and I have been re-united with the past and have been in close contact with each other since. Although my daughter and Michael have divorced after nine years, my wife Yoshi and I have just celebrated our 42nd anniversary!

During our first meeting back in 1961, Potter sensei has had an accomplished law enforcement career. Not making the Marine Corps a career, he joined the Oceanside Police Dept in the late 1960's. Having served in every dept within the Oceanside PD he moved on to the California Department of Justice -Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement/DEA. For several years he was an undercover agent and distinguished himself again with another service to the public. Retiring from the Justice Department in Aug 2003, Chuck (Bill) Potter sensei is now a Private Investigator … you just can't keep a good man down! Although Potter sensei is not known to the world as most claimed individuals would like us to believe, he is the real deal and has proven his personal talents in combative tactics in the profession that he has chosen. If you ever need a friend and a good Investigator … Bill (Chuck) Potter is a person that's been there, done that, knows the ropes and has seen it all.
