The unknown art of Okinawa
Shobudo Jujitsu, translated as Beginning Martial or Warrior Spirit Way was founded by Soke Nakasato Shoshu and was taught on Okinawa during the late 1950's through the mid 80's to a fortunate few. The origins and history of Shobudo Jujitsu, both its founder and his art are very vague.
Nakasato's father's art, was a system named from learning several styles in and around Fukuoka and Kagoshima. In the early 1950's Nakasato took the best of his father's art and what he had learned after the war, combining them into what he thought to be a more realistic and practical system, then renaming it to Shobudo Bujitsu Jujitsu. According to Soke Nakasato, Shobudo Jujitsu is made up of eight different arts. Shorinji Kempo and Ninjitsu systems are evident by several personal home made weapons shown to my wife and I.
Shobudo Jujitsu, like Shorinji Kempo is a combination of Karate, Judo and Aikido. It’s a defensive system first, offense second . Taught also is the Jo, Bojutsu and the Mijikai Shaku-Bo … unique only to Shobudo Jujitsu. Derivatives of Aikijujutsu are evident and at one time I believe he was associated with Motobu-Ryu Bujutsu of Okinawa.
In general, Shobudo Jujitsu is strictly a defensive art. Offense is second, to counter with a combination of strikes, throws, chokes, joint-locks and submission takedowns. From day one, Shobudo Jujitsu is a combination of several arts, which include strong hard blocks, strikes, low kicks, throws, chokes, nerve/pressure points applied individually or in combination with one another. Emphasis is placed on in-depth detail in the perfection of joint locking vice leverage locking applications. Synonymous with Shobudo Jujitsu and heavily stressed is the controlled element of "Itai" plus the very important and necessary application of "Ki".
